How to use Long Reach Scalers
Long reach tools are pneumatic (driven by compressed air) percussive tools that use a hammer action to break, chip and scrape materials from a range of surfaces, including concrete, steel and wood. They are available with an array of attachments which makes these very versatile machines.
Long reach tools are available in two variants, the standard steel construction and the lightweight ‘lite’ aluminium version, which is 35% lighter than its steel counterpart. The aluminium version is specifically designed for applications that require operators to work in hard-to-reach areas and vertical or overhead surfaces.
The tools have very low air consumption, requiring only a small portable compressor 4.5 CFM for operation. While pneumatic tools do require a compressor, a compact plug-in wall compressor is more than sufficient to power the tools.
Long Reach Scaler applications

Tool adjustments for specialised applications
A brief look at how adjusting the tool’s specifications can help you tailor its performance to meet the unique needs of certain tasks.
- Renovation jobs – use a 2ft scaler with a 4-inch bolster for tasks like removing plaster from walls during renovation projects.
- Flooring jobs – use a 4ft or 5ft tool for pulling up lino, vinyl flooring, carpet tiles, and ceramic tiles as well as reaching hard-to-reach areas.
- Paint removal and cleaning – the needle attachment is ideal for removing paint and coatings, as well as cleaning machinery.
Long Reach Scaler attachment options
A complete range of attachments are available for the pneumatic long reach scalers that Trelawny offer. Your choice of attachments include:
- Chisels
Our chisels start from 1 inch and are available in a variety of sizes, including 4-inch bolster chisels – ideal for tasks such as chipping up tiles or removing material from mixers.
The smaller the chisel, the greater the impact and pressure it delivers, making the 1-inch chisel better suited to aggressive applications. Watch it in action here. - Spark-resistant aluminium bronze chisels
For cleaning and stripping applications in hazardous areas such as storage tanks, pharmaceutical or flour mills where high concentrations of gas or flammable dust create an explosion risk. - Scrapers
Available in sizes ranging from 4 inches to 12 inches. Similar to chisels, for a more aggressive material removal, use a narrower blade for added impact. If you need more coverage, use the wider blade. These blades come in two variants: bevelled edge and sharpened edge. They are available as an assembly item or in packs of four or five spare blades. - Needle scaler
Add to the long reach to convert it into a needle scaler in seconds. Ideal for deck areas, hard-to-reach areas and working at height. - Comb inserts
Designed for the fast cleaning and dressing of masonry surfaces such as brick and natural stone. They are effective for removing mortar, cleaning and levelling without damaging the brick or stonework.
Maintaining your Long Reach Scaler
When maintaining your tools, always lubricate them by adding a few drops of oil into the air inlet or buy an in-line oiler to assist. Find: Oil Whip Hose & Oiler Assembly on our website.
The service kit
With the service, you can get all the basic seals and triggers, as well as any parts that might break or wear out over the tool’s lifespan, helping you to extend its usage for you. Full information on servicing, visit YouTube.
Helpful tips
When using the pneumatic Long Reach Stripper, choose the ‘Long Reach LITE’ option for improved operator comfort when working at heights. Let the tool do the work – applying excessive pressure on the head can prevent full extension, potentially stalling the tool and reducing performance.
