HAV syndrome prevention - why the HSE calls for change
According to Concrete Connect’s article, “HSE urges employers to protect workers from vibration risks”, 215 new and preventable cases of hand arm vibration syndrome were reported alone in Great Britain last year. This highlights the ongoing risk of HAV syndrome exposure in the workplace. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is urging employers to respond proactively by using its vibration exposure calculator and following clear guidance to identify and control hazards.
Understanding hand arm vibration syndrome
Hand arm vibration syndrome is caused by excessive exposure to vibrations from high-powered equipment, which is often referred to as HAV syndrome. The effects of the vibrations include tingling and numbness, loss of grip strength and in severe cases, permanent disability. While occasional use of vibrating tools may not be a major risk, long-term and repeated exposure must be managed carefully to protect operators from HAVs.
Why prevention of HAV syndrome is vital
The recent HSE figures show that hand arm vibration syndrome remains a big issue in the workplace. Prevention isn’t just about compliance, it’s about protecting workers’ long-term health and making sure they can carry out their work safely. Employers can take practical steps by:
- Monitoring vibration exposure levels
- Training staff to recognise early symptoms
- Implementing a proactive approach to equipment selection and maintenance
Pushing for industry change
At Trelawny, we’ve long recognised the risks associated with HAV syndrome and have invested in designing tools that help reduce exposure to hand arm vibration syndrome. Our Vibro-Lo™ technology (short for ‘low-vibration system’) was developed as part of this commitment, providing operators with equipment that:
- Reduces discomfort during use
- Supports long-term tool reliability
- Helps minimise the risk of material damage
All Trelawny Vibro-Lo™ tools are designed with safety in mind and reduce the risks of hand arm vibration syndrome. The main benefits include:
- Protects workers – Reduces the risk of HAVS and operator fatigue, improving wellbeing and safety on site.
- Supports compliance – Helps employers meet HSE and regulatory requirements with safer equipment choices.
- Boosts productivity – Enables longer safe working times, reduces downtime, and improves work quality.
- Cuts operating costs – Extends equipment life and minimises material damage for greater efficiency.
By working closely with industry partners and continually developing new technologies, we aim to play our part in reducing vibration-related injuries across the sector.
