Trelawny B Series Chisel and Needle Scalers

Everything you need to know about Trelawny B Series Pneumatic Chisel and Needle scalers

14 May

If you already work in surface preparation, you know how much depends on tool choice. Output, finish quality and uptime all sit on that decision. The right chisel or needle scaler gives you control, speed and a consistent result across different materials.

The Trelawny B Series Pneumatic Chisel and Needle Scalers focus on those priorities. They suit heavy use, varied tasks and demanding site conditions.

What a needle scaler delivers on site

A needle scaler uses a bundle of hardened needles to break down coatings, rust and debris. The needles strike the surface at high frequency and adapt to the profile beneath.

This gives you an advantage on:

You avoid the risk of cutting into the base material while still removing build-up efficiently. With 12 to 28 needles in-line across the range, you can match the tool to the level of work.

How the B Series Needle scaler performs under load

Each tool uses reciprocating needles that strike the surface thousands of times per minute. That impact removes coatings fast and keeps effort low for the operator.

Fewer parts reduce wear points and help maintain consistent output across long shifts. On site, that means less downtime and fewer service interruptions.

Air efficiency also plays a part. Lower consumption reduces strain on compressors and supports multi-tool setups where needed.

One tool that covers more work

The B Series converts from a needle scaler to a chisel scaler with a simple attachment change. This allows you to move from detailed cleaning to heavier material removal without switching tools.

For contractors and rental fleets, this reduces the amount of equipment required on site. It also speeds up task changes and keeps work moving.

Built for site conditions

The construction reflects the environments where needle scalers and chisel tools operate. The all-metal body supports durability and extends service life under repeated use.

For specialist applications, needle choice becomes critical:

These options allow the same tool to fit different safety requirements.

Dust control and compliance

The TVS shroud system allows connection to Trelawny KAV industrial vacuums. This enables dust-free operation when removing coatings such as lead-based paint.

With a controlled setup, clean-up is quicker and compliance with site regulations is easier to maintain. It also reduces setup time and keeps projects to schedule.

Access to difficult areas

Long reach variants extend access to confined spaces and awkward positions. This helps maintain output where standard tools struggle to reach.

Industries that use needle scalers and chisels

The B Series sees use across sectors where surface preparation is routine. It fits environments such as ship repair yards, offshore platforms, power plants and rail facilities. It also applies to infrastructure work, including bridges and pipelines.

They’re widely used by:

  • petrochemical refineries
  • environmental contractors
  • demolition contractors
  • asbestos abatement contractors
  • industrial painting contractors

In manufacturing, it applies across steel fabrication, cement plants and wastewater treatment facilities.

Common needle scaler and chisel applications

Typical applications focus on the assets and surfaces being prepared:

  • ships, barges and offshore rigs
  • steel bridges, pylons and structural steel
  • rail stations and rolling stock
  • tanks, pipelines and process equipment
  • concrete surfaces and stone finishes
  • construction and agricultural machinery

It also suits work where surface finish is specified or visible.

Model selection and air supply

Each model aligns with different output levels:

ModelAir consumption (LPS/CFM)
1B1.42/3
2B2.6/5.5
2BPG2.6/5.5
3BPG3.8/8

Your compressor must meet the required Free Air Delivery at 90 PSI. This ensures consistent performance and avoids pressure drop during use.

Needle scaler and chisel options and consumables

Tools come with 180mm x 3mm chisel tip needles as standard. From there, selection depends on the task.

For hard scale and coatings, chisel or pointed tips provide a stronger impact. For hazardous environments, non-spark needles improve safety. For stainless applications, stainless needles prevent contamination.

Needle life varies with use. Expect between 50 and 100 hours in most conditions, with longer life in lighter tasks.

Needle scaler maintenance and setup

Service kits cover key wear parts and should be supplied with each tool:

  • 1B: 446.1010
  • 2B: 466.1020
  • 2BPG: 446.1025
  • 3BPG: 446.1035

The tools can be dismantled on site without specialist equipment for quick servicing and reduced downtime.

Lubrication remains important. Use ISO22 low viscosity pneumatic or hydraulic oil. An in-line oiler suits continuous use.

Air supply should use a hose with a minimum bore of 10mm (3/8”) and a 1/4” BSP inlet.

When to scale up

For larger flat areas, other equipment may suit better. Peening tools work well on vertical surfaces. Walk-behind scalers, scabblers and scarifiers cover open areas with higher output.
